The dictionaries define layette as "a set of clothing for a newborn baby." With all due respect to Merriam Webster, we're just not sure that's terribly helpful when considering the wide array of baby clothes that are available for infants!. So for our customers we're going to try to explain what we mean by "Layette."

Baby clothes are definitely the most central factor of what we mean by Layette. But rather than what would often be considered "outerwear" we think of it more as "everyday wear" for infants. We wouldn't consider a fancy dress for a baby girl to be a layette item, nor would we consider a tiny tuxedo or a vest to be a layette item for an infant boy. It's a rather subjective definition, unfortunately, but we'll do our best to stick to some kind of sensible standard.

Baby clothes here at Baby Mall Online include bodysuits (onesies), sleep n play (gowns and footed sleepers or pajamas), blankets (and sleeping sacs), shirts & pants (lap-shoulder shirts & "sweat" style pants), as well as side-snap shirts (hospital shirts), playwear (rompers), and accessories (such as caps and mittens). Places like Wikipedia include many of our other categories like burp cloths, hooded towels, socks & booties, and even washcloths, so it looks like we're all on about the same page as far as our definition goes, even if no one has come up with a really solid and encompassing definition yet! We just group baby bath and baby socks in other places here on our site!

So Layette is a sort of basic, but cute, type of baby clothing that's geared toward newborns and other infant ages. As such, most of our sizes here at Baby Mall Online are aimed at the youngest babies. Any baby clothes that have legs or pants are subject to different safety regulations, and so we aim at keeping our baby clothes of that nature to sizes up to 9 months. Baby shirts or bodysuits that don't have legs, though, come in sizes as large as 24 months! We've had requests from customers to see our stuff in larger sizes, but we're not a toddler clothing company - we're a baby clothes company, and so we stay focused on infants and newborns.
