Baby bodysuits are an essential part of every baby’s line of baby clothes and baby layette items. Baby bodysuits are also known by a variety of other terms, including baby onesies, baby one-piece shirts or outfits, baby rompers or baby undershirts or underwear. Layette is a term that means a collection of clothes for a newborn baby.

Probably the most popular of these terms is baby onesies, but at Baby Mall Online we use the term baby bodysuits to describe them in our category listings, and both baby onesies and baby bodysuits in our written text (mostly for some variety so it doesn’t read so repetitively). Just as the terms themselves are highly interchangeable, baby bodysuits and baby onesies are an important but versatile part of your baby’s outfit.

Essentially a baby bodysuit or baby onesie is a short sleeved shirt for a baby with one significant difference – the bottom of the shirt in the back wraps under the baby’s diaper and fastens to the shirt in the front. In this way baby onesies provide additional support for the diaper to help prevent it from falling off or twisting around.

Primarily baby bodysuits, or baby onesies, are worn underneath other baby clothing such as dresses, coveralls, or shirt and pant sets. As any experienced mom will tell you, however, baby bodysuits can frequently work just fine as an outfit by themselves, especially when the baby onesie is combined with a pair of baby pants and some baby socks!

Baby onesies on Baby Mall Online are notable for more than being known as baby bodysuits, they are also made from a range of various weaves of cotton. Some bodysuits are made of luxuriant 100% interlock combed cotton, while other onesies are made of a lighter 100% rib knit cotton.

The interlock means that the cotton is made from a finer yarn, which makes for a softer touch. Luvable Friends brand combed cotton uses 40-count, finer yarn for the cotton. Rib knit cotton uses 30-count yarn. The result is that the combed cotton bodysuits have a softer feel to them than the rib-knit, since the higher the count of the yarn the softer the fabric, but even the 30-count is still comfortable for extended wear by a newborn. The cotton used results in a fabric that is very absorbent and still soft and comfortable for baby.

Most of the baby bodysuits that we offer here at Baby Mall Online are available in sizes up to 24 months. When paired with pants, however, the size available is limited by the size of the pants offered - up to 9 months. Some baby onesies, such as some of the Baby-Says Bodysuits, may be limited to up to 12 months, but most are available to fit from newborn baby to 2 years old!
